Volunteer Centre and university collaboration example
Added to Do-it knowledge bank on May 12, 2010By working together and sharing information Volunteer Centre Greenwich and the University of Greenwich have built a successful relationship.
The University of Greenwich and the Volunteer Centre Greenwich (VCG) have been in regular communication for a number of years. They work together in the following ways:
Attending the VCG Volunteer Managers Forum
Greenwich Volunteer Coordinators Forum meets quarterly. It’s a great opportunity for members to discuss volunteering-related issues, network, and gain new ideas. The Guidance & Employability Team (GET) staff members also attend these meetings, as it offers an excellent opportunity to meet local organisations and find out about new volunteering opportunities. It also gives us a chance to promote our on-campus events and activities, such as the annual volunteering fair, where organisations come to promote their opportunities.
VCG attends campus events
The VCG often has a stall at campus events, such as our annual Part-Time Work and Volunteering Fair, offering information during Student Volunteering Week or National Volunteering Week. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote the work, activities and events that they provide, and offers scope to recruit young people into their v-involved project. This is also a great opportunity for students of the university to find out about local voluntary work.
Training and support
The VCG also offer a programme of workshops and presentations for both volunteer managers and students to attend.
Sarah, the Employability Administrator at the University of Greenwich had this to say,
“Based at the University of Greenwich it is my role to promote local volunteering opportunities to the students that study here. The relationship that has developed with the Volunteer Centre Greenwich has been invaluable. They have supported our work at the university by: providing access to a wide range of excellent local volunteering opportunities, introducing me to local volunteer involving organisations that I have developed partnerships with and have also provided a volunteer managers forum where best practice can be shared and support given.”
