How can sports organisations recruit more volunteers?|
Are you looking to increase the numbers of people participating in your sport? We can show you how to use the 2012 Games to recruit volunteer coaches, outreach workers or even someone to market your organisation's activities, which can help increase your participation numbers.
Already, thousands of people have been inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to get involved in local Games inspired activities.
The Inspiration and Legacy from the 2012 Games project is jointly run by Volunteering England and YouthNet (creators of Do-it) and aims to help sports organisations harness this enthusiasm around the 2012 Games to enable them to recruit a larger and more diverse group of volunteers.
Infrastructure body? You should promote this project to your network because:
Volunteers are crucial to increasing the number of people participating in sports. This is highlighted by the fact that over 100,000 sports clubs in England are run by volunteers and involve over 8 million volunteers in total. Helping NGBs and local clubs increase the number and diversity of their volunteers, can help them reach more people and expand their programmes, allowing more local people to participate in sport.
Sports club or organisation? You should get involved because:
- Reach inspired volunteers: We are working with the Government Olympic Executive and LOCOG to ensure that people who have been inspired by the 2012 Games to volunteer can find local Games inspired volunteering opportunities. This will be through a new digital channel which will be the one place where everyone who has been inspired by the 2012 Games will be directed to, enabling them to find Games inspired volunteering opportunities in their local area.
- Diversify by recruiting volunteers from outside your membership: By advertising opportunities through Do-it and the digital channel, NGBs can reach new volunteers. On Do-it alone, out of our 600,000 registered users, 70% are under the age of 35 and 26% are from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background. In our recent survey 38% had never volunteered before.
- Volunteers are searching for sports related opportunities: We have double the number of volunteers interested in sports volunteering as we have opportunities to offer them. We need your opportunities to help us create supply for this demand.
- Organisations are already getting involved: We have over 13,300 Games inspired opportunities currently being advertised on Do-it. Find out why Holly Hart from the Rugby Football Union for Women has got involved in this project.
Our flow chart can help you find the best way for your organisation to upload your opportunities onto Do-it and the new digital channel.
Do people really want to volunteer in local Games inspired roles?
In a DCMS survey, 33% of people said that they would get involved with a volunteering activity linked with the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This rose to 50% amongst young people.
How can an NGB, local club or other sports organisation get involved?
It's so simple! Organisations can upload their opportunities onto Do-it, the national volunteering database, either directly or via their local Volunteer Centre. When the opportunity is uploaded you simply click a button to 'tag' the opportunity as Games inspired. These opportunities will then be advertised on Do-it as well as the on the new digital channel.
