ICA Young Community Leaders Project

ICA, a global development chairity, is launching a two-year project funded through v to train young people aged 13-25 in leadership and community skills so that they can make a difference in their local communities

ICA has being doing work around community development in over 34 countries for 50 years, and in the UK is branching out to focus more specifically on young people's contributions and skills.

The project will involve launch events in Bolton and London in April, followed by 12 weekly sessions in each location. These sessions will include training in action planning, delivering projects, having meetings, group work skills and applying for funding.

At the end of the 12 weeks both groups will have done a community mapping exercise and will have worked out a project that they want to run in the community. Over the next few months, with the help of ICA and a host organisation, they will deliver a community project and also identify other ways they can volunteer locally or through ICA.

"This is a very exciting project for us," said Amelia Lee from the Youth Programme. "In other countries around the world this has had a great response and some fantastic projects have emerged from it."

Young people will be expected to give about three hours of their time each week for about nine months. In return they can expect to develop loads of new skills, have fun and get a Youth Achievement Award. Some might even stay around and help deliver the project again next year.
