Environment - introduction

Whatever your interests, you should definitely try some kind of environmental volunteering at least once in your life. In our ever more sedentary lives, braving the great outdoors and getting your hands dirty is incredibly satisfying.

If you can't find an opportunity on do-it.org.uk, try contacting an organisation direct. BTCV is probably the biggest provider of environmental opportunities, in cities and in the countryside.

While there's something very immediate and gratifying about planting trees or cleaning ponds, there's a huge range of other ways you can volunteer to help the environment.

The focus of many environmental charities is campaigning, and they rely on volunteers for both direct action and letter and email writing. Many have local groups you can get involved with, focusing on local issues as well as global ones.

Most environmental charities need help with fundraising and administration. If that's what interests you but you can't find an opportunity, try contacting a local organisation and offering your services.

If you're looking for a career in the environmental sector, volunteering is definitely a good place to start. You can get experience, learn about the different kinds of work available and make some crucial contacts.

But, as ever with volunteering, it's the range of different opportunities that is most striking. From recycling to residential breaks in the UK or overseas, there really is something for everyone.
