The Students' Blog e-mail this to a friend

If you think students spend all their spare time avoiding studying, going out with their mates and having a good time then you'd be right. Well our student bloggers do anyway. While they assure us they don't slack on the study, they've got a lot to answer for when it comes to enjoying themselves while volunteering.

My new career plan...!

My new career plan…!

Before I started St. John I wanted to be a teacher. But now, keeping the theme of children I want to be an educational psychologist. I know they are similar in ways, but in some ways they are really different.

I changed my mind for a few reasons. Firstly I have seen the amazing effect an educational psychologist can have, through volunteering and I want to be able to make a difference to young people like that.

I also want to be able to work with a variety of different age groups, just like I do at cadets. There, I work with children from ten to people my age. I love the variety and so teaching just one year group didn’t appeal as much any more. I want the challenge and variety of working with all different age groups from all walks of life and trying to make a difference and can’t wait till uni so I can start training.

Wow! I'd really like to go into educational psychology too. Although I don't know much about it. Do you? Your comments sound really interesting and inspiring especially for me because I wanted to go into teaching (although mainly for that 'golden handshake' business!!) but yeah, it just seems boring to work within one same year group over and over again. So, what voluntary work did you do? I'd like to just work with children really. I'm even thinking about taking a gap year to kind of give myself the opportunity to get a foot on the ladder soes to speak. What do you think? Well, just to conclude, I really can to relate to what you wrote and it has encouraged me to want to work with children or youths and ultimately to research more about educational psychology! Thanks!

YAY !!! i'm really happy i've inspired u - woooh !! LOL. I know a bit about educational psychology ( since i had to choose my a-levels for next year ). you will need to do a 3 year degree in psycology and then go on to do a second uni course in eductaional psychology, in most cases. to get onto the uni course for pycology you need to have about 260 ucas points ( which is basically ur a-levels ).

If you take a look t this website there is loads of infomation abgout all types of work in psycology, especially educational.

I agree - working with children would be really good and i think working with them in this way could be so benificial to them and could really make a difference to their lives. There are so many differnt options for working with children so you copuld maybe look at some other options as well - like teaching, and social work which are along the same lines as educational psycology.

Hope this helps , feel free to email me or wrote back.
