The Students' Blog

If you think students spend all their spare time avoiding studying, going out with their mates and having a good time then you'd be right. Well our student bloggers do anyway. While they assure us they don't slack on the study, they've got a lot to answer for when it comes to enjoying themselves while volunteering.

My Future in Volunteering...

Hi there!

Very shortly, I am starting my leadership qualification for Girlguiding even though I cannot officially have my warrent until I am 18. (16 now, just) I can complete all the work for it at my own pace though over the next two years and then when I am 18 I am hoping to have passed my course at college and got a job at a school (as well as doing my teacher training), and if they do not already have a brownies established I really hope to set one up myself. I am a good team worker but I see this as my own challange, to prove myself to my district and to myself and really get involved and run a brownie unit. Or mabye even a rainbow unit, we will have to see.

I am also going to log my hours for my millenium volunteers, which I hope to have achieved the first level in the next couple of years. Up, Up and Away!!!!!

I do hope to travel abroad, volunteering in the future, perhaps after college before the big scary world of work. Where? Don't know. Doing what? Urm, no idea! But I will sort it out hehe!!

I am always open to new volunteering, but for now, I have plenty on my books! Would love to hear from anyone else with similar ideas to me, leave me a message in the comments bit, I will look I promise, but like i said before, be nice :-D

Righteo guys, gotta go but keep looking back, you never know I might even write another entry before xmas hehe - I make that a promise!!

Luv ya,

Ashlee x x x x

Hi Ashley! My names Tooba and Im from Ashton-u-Lyne. I read ur blogs about Brownies and thought i'd post a comment about it coz i started volunteering at my local brownies about 2 months ago.
just thought i'd share my experience with u! I found out about it through this website and i'd done volunteering before (oxfam charity shop) and also had just found out about the millenium volunteers scheme. So thought id try brownies simply because it was something different. I have to admit its really fun though at first it wasn't coz i didnt know the kids that well. but it didnt take long to get to know them all, and kids are so friendly and non-judgemental!

im really enjoying my time there and it makes me want to become a primary school teacher or something! though thats just a thought...im at uni currently studying management. Well, hope to see your reply!

bye! x

I am starting in the new year - got to sort the paperwork out and find me a mentor so hopefully that should start taking place in January. :D

I am hoping to do mine slowly over the next two years because I cannot get my warrent until then anyhow so no point rushing, pacing is the way forward.

Anyhow, have a lovely christmas and a good new year at brownies.

Love Ashley x x x

Congrats to you all who have taken up volunteering with Rainbows, Brownies or Guides! I was a volunteer Rainbow leader (5-7yrs) whilst a student at Plymouth Uni. I had a great time, and since then have travelled the world, meeting Guiding groups all over, very friendly bunch they are too!
Now I am back home and am a Rainbow and Guide leader and hope to open a new Rainbow unit soon.
Keep on having fun, and the girls will too.
Well done,
Fiona

I used to help out at my local Rainbows unit and was pre-warranted when I was 15. This also covered my to help out at the Brownies unit too at the same time. Now that i'm 32 i'm going to train up to run my own Rainbow unit!
In answer to your question Ashlee, Rangers follows the Guides. Can;t remember what age that runs to as there are hardly any of those units around. I used to want to be a ranger. If your area already ahs a brownie or rainbow unit you can always ask for the girls' names off the list and open a '2nd (your area)Brownies or Rainbows' unit.
just remember that anything you do to help any unit out included doing things like pack holiday or coffee mornings, keep a diary so that you can fill out your work book.
