The Students' Blog

If you think students spend all their spare time avoiding studying, going out with their mates and having a good time then you'd be right. Well our student bloggers do anyway. While they assure us they don't slack on the study, they've got a lot to answer for when it comes to enjoying themselves while volunteering.

Friends
Okay so i've told you how good it is to volunteer, and so have Ashley and Moira and eveyrone else on here. But then we are all kinda bias because we all enjoy it so much and write our blogs. What about the people which don't write about their experiences? Well i thougth abotu this and decided to ask some of my volunteering friends why they did it so here goes ...
Why do you volunteer?
"Erm, well, I enjoy it, thats one reason..Also its good for the cv/personal statement Plus personal development And theres great people there"
"coz i wana be a paramedic and i wana get the expericne and confidenance b4 its too late"
"you get to meet loads fo new people who trun out to be the best friends as you share so much together . it';s loads fo fun and looks good on ur CV !! "
What is the most memorable thing about volunteering?
"the first person i helped out was really memorable as all teh hard work had paid of which rocked."
"passing the first aid exam was a really gd day. i passed ! and so did everyone else which made it really good and means we can go out and get proper experience now."
See i told you ti was good ! now you don't have to just take my word for it.
Till next time take care

St. John adult division
Hi people, hope you are all well.
Cadets is the part of St. John for young people between the ages of 10 and 16. Badgers is for children younger that this, kinda like Ashlee's rainbows. Links is then for univercity students, however adult memebers of St. John also regualy meet. Anyone over the age of sixteen can go to the meetings where lots of new skills can be learned, experienece gained, and new friends made.
i have been going to the adult division regually for a while now, and am encouragaing some of teh older cadets to come along to. It is a great way to develop both first aid and interpersonal skills as you get to meet lots of new people all over the county.
If anyone wants to join their adult, cadet or badger division you can find out where your nearest oen si by visiting: http://www.sja.org.uk/counties/default.asp
Don't be scared you can just viosit or ring the contact details given and find out more infor - or just ask me for any information you need. It's really good to go.

First aid
Hello again !!
Most of you probably know first aid is a major part of St John, you might have seen some first aiders at public events such as fireworks, fates, fairs etc. They are all volunteers too, but to ensure their skills are all up to date it is a requirnement taht every memeber of St, John, adults, cadet or badger muct coplete a refresher frist aid course every year, and then a larger one every three years ( Young life saver plus for teh cadets and First aid at work for the adults). Theprevious courses have finished now, which some very good and some interesting results. the media groups ended up with a lot of interesting footage and photos from the division of many of the cadets and unfortunately a lot of me - maybe because i ran away from teh camera making me a more fun target !?!? The casulty simulation gruop ended teh tearm with a full portfolio of cuts, bruises and broken bones - a few even had very convincing astma attacks. ( all fake of course )
At the monent the cadets are doing their yearly first aid review which consists of a six week cours and then the dreaded assesment. One of our old adults has come back to teach teh course, as this one needs a qualified first aid instructor. Since most of the cadets have already done their first aid more than once, our instructor is making it as fun as possible.
Organisation for the christmas disco continues.
Stay warm love

Random Stuff (sorry -- my brain is frozen form the cold)
Hi everyone - just like to say how cold is it?? i hate winter.
Updates from the Race Hike - our cadets came last - in fact they were overtaken - but it was lots of fun and they all enjoyed staying up until 2am. Oh yes -and i finally got my last GCSE result back (it had to be remarked for the second time) and my final results are 5 A* and 10 A -- see volunteering doesn't mess up your stuides whatever you school/college might have to say.
Ne way, your probably thinking that it muct be really hard to volunteer and that you don't get any rewards from it. How wrong you are. It is so easy to volunteer, you don't have to do anything complicated just find soemthing you enjoy, feel passionate about and what to help, and then look at how you can help. It's that easy.
As for the rewards, there are loads. Everytime you help soemone, make a difference even a tiny one you will feel good about yourself. Knowing you have actually done something nice for someone, that helped them to be happier is a really good feeling. Also - that CV your going to have write sooner or later is pretty hard to fill unless you have some extra curicular activities. Just think how good it will look to have volunteer work and football/plays an instrument rather than just the football. Employers, univercities, colleges, reward people all pay a lot of attention to soemthing like that, putting you at an advantge. how can that be bad?
Voluntering is nothing like school or anything like that. It does take work yes, sometimes more than others, but teh rewards are so much greater. You never know if you volunteer you might recieve a volunteer award just like Moira (campaigners blog). You will meet loads of new interesting people, and have friends for life. It's not difficult at all, i promise.
till next time
