Travelling bug
Hey, my names Jonathan and have always wanted to travel. I come from a small town just outside Scotlands biggest city, Glasgow. I'm only 19 but have been to quite a few destinations although all with my family.
During my first year at university (which has just finished) a group called the International Student Volunteers came into a few lectures and told us about their organisation; basically telling us that we get to go to a far away country for at least a month, do two weeks volunteer work and two weeks outdoor adventure, all for a reduced price.
I was sold! I got a leaflet and saw New Zealand, and instantly knew that I wanted to go as I've always had a craving to go. As this is my first time travelling such a distance myself, and doing any kind of volunteer work, I have no idea what to expect. But from what people have told me of their own experiences it's something that I'm looking forward to.
So here's hoping that this is the start of the travelling/volunteer bug giving me a big bite on the arm!

NYOKOKO BRIDGE SCHOOL FOR ABANDONED CHILDREN AND VICTIMS OF ABUSE AND TRAFFICKING in GHANA
INTRODUCTION
Self-development through self-education and promotion of work culture through education is our primary aim. Learning through the book of life and nature will lead to happy life in future. For this the students in their formative age should cultivate the habit of learning through doing.
As far as the school is concerned, the village children prefer to join the school which is nearer. There are no government schools in the village. But all schools have to be recognized by the Ghana Education Service and have to teach the curriculum laid down by the Director of Education in Ghana. The atmosphere, facilities in our school attract the students to our school.
It has been acknowledged that every minute four children become trafficked and orphaned, in the world.
These children are hungry, lonely and exposed to various activities of danger. Children, who miss love, care and opportunities for improving their lives today, will be a big burden to their community in the future. That is why this situation calls for every compassionate heart to try to find ways and means to help alleviate the suffering of these children.
Friends of Suffering Humanity Mission is to accept these abandoned children to its shelter and take care of them by providing food, clothes, education and transform them into significant contributors to their communities.
Rev. Sr. Constance Gemme supported some children with uniforms and hygienic materials,. At present 105 children are enrolled with this project. Presently Friends of Suffering Humanity is running a community based education in Nyokoko.
In this centre Friends of Suffering Humanity engaged 3 community teachers. They are working with community, children.
All these children will be mainstreamed in different formal school within July 2010.
Community members are now very much glad and proud. They participate in all the activities of this project as their own work. This is for the first time; they have realized the need of such community based education for their own empowerment. The parents have realized the importance of these community centers for the education of their non school going and
dropped out children. Children have found back their interest in schooling because of interesting learning materials and innovative learning style.
We are trying to find out ways and means to co-relate education with actual living by creating avenues of more purposeful education, which could make students going through the portals of academy, work for a descent living and imbibe in the children the virtue of culture and finally find a impetus to their instinct of creativity. Such a student, then in her later life would derive the real satisfaction from her life and also enhance the cultural and social level of his surroundings directly and his country indirectly.
Project Goal: Nyokoko Bridge School
Ensuring right to Education to deprived children in Nyokoko community through integration of support system and responsive community action.
Project Objectives:
A) Spread awareness and motivate parents in target location on importance of children¿s education.
B) To facilitate and develop a model of Child friendly education system and to create interest amongst the children towards formal education system.
C) Create a participatory model of Community Schooling through integrating the existing
education / school and support systems.
D) Ensure participation of children in developing child friendly teaching learning materials and facilitate their process of learning joyful.
Project History:
Friends of Suffering Humanity for the last 6 years are engaged in these activities. At present there are near about 105 children and adolescents who are involved with this project. The experiences gathered through this project have encouraged Friends of Suffering Humanity for its future activities.
A. To work within the existing resources and systems, strengthen and making it more functional and no attempt to create any parallel alternative.
B. To involve the family and the environment within the work area.
C. To give priority to child rights in respect of education.
Project beneficiaries:
The direct beneficiaries of this project will be 1500 childre for mainstreaming program. They are basically vulnerable group of Deprived Children, more specifically street children, working children, children of sex workers, children of families ¿ at risk¿ ( single parents), girl child.
Indirectly we can ensure participation of community children & parents, formal schools, local authority, clubs and other NGOs.
At present around 100 children are enlisted in the primary level education. We have created opportunities for these children to take formal education.
Friends of Suffering Humanity has got an access to reach to the non school going children and dropped out children of the community through this project. As
1. Friends of Suffering Humanity has been working with this project and the community members for last 6 years it is succeeding to acquire their faith and believe in community based non-formal schooling.
2. Community members and parents have started to accept this project as their own project and that is why hundred percent participation from the community members is now the asset of this project. After an endless effort
3. Friends of Suffering Humanity is succeeding to make the community members understand that Education is the right of every children and that is why children are not for schools rather schools are mend for their education. So if they were unable to reach to school then school would reach to them.
4. Friends of Suffering Humanity assumes that 100 students out of 200 students are going to be mainstreamed with in July¿2010.It itself proves its credibility in community based education.
5. The students of this community are now acting as role model for other non school going children of the community.
Expected Outcome
Having experience of two and 6 years in the same work,
Friends of Suffering Humanity expects to mainstream 500 non-school going and dropped out children of age group 5 to 9 in different formal schools in August 2010.
