Study rewards

Hey everyone!

Well, once again it’s me Tashi with a bigger work load then before. So as many of you will know all exams have been taking place and so this is where the majority of my focus has been as I have high hopes for myself. Lucky for me my exams were rewarded with a trip to Barcelona with my subject teacher. So now I’m back in town and really want to get my head down and continue to produce so great things for the magazine because recently it doesn’t seem to have achieved much. Although I say this I know that means I will have to reorganise my time so I can do the rest of my sixth form work, continue to stay in part time job, have a social life, do all my hobbies which include hockey and dance also, not forgotten my personal targets for the council of girls. So yeah, when I put it like that there aren’t enough hours in a day but, all I can do is my best. Anyway, I shall go now so I can finish my readings and note taking for sociology then maybe try and fit some dinner in before continuing my psychology project.

Bye for now, Tash x

Exam time

Hi everyone!

I’m Grace the deputy spoke for Sydenham Girls. Over the past few weeks it’s been so hectic with exams and revision that the council of girls has taken a back seat. It’s been very tricky to find a time when everyone is free so we can get together and have a meeting, so unfortunately it has been quite a while since we have had a meeting.

Thankfully exams are over now and schoolwork will be less time consuming so focus is back on the council. In the next few weeks at Sydenham we hope to have the meetings back up and running and hopefully progress with the magazine will take place.

I hope everyone’s exams went well, and good luck for those who haven’t finished xoxo

The challenges

Helloooo all!!

well I am Biz, the spoke for Wellington College council of girls and in all honesty we have been struggling a bit with really getting CoG set up and on its feet at Wellington. As the school only took girls in a few years ago it is still a bit of a touchy subject with the boys, so trying to explain to them exactly what the CoG actually is has been really difficult and they just seem to think it is some young feminist movement! WHICH IT ISN'T!

I think that as it developes and grows it will have more support and I think we will be able to have a much more positive influence on other girls and just to project a much better image for all kinds of girls our age. I know there are so many of us out there who really do want to make a difference and I think when CoG is more established that will be a goal that we will be able to achieve and there will be so many more possibilities and openings for us to get involved in.

So just keep smiling and doing all that you can to achieve what you want to and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!x-x-x-x

Hear the voice of young females

Hey everybody!

My name is Tashi and I'm at a sixth form in South London. I'm doing Maths, Sociology, Spanish & Psychology AS Levels. As well as trying to do loads of extra curricular activities, gain work experience and research into my future career and of courses, like any normal teenager, have a Social Life!

Many of the people I have spoken to have raised the fact that they see the Council of Girls as a great opportunity to be involved in what should hopefully be a march of progress in making people more aware of the true feelings behind young females, instead of adults trying to write as if they can actually relate to everything we as young ladies think about. Therefore, I hope that by the end of the academic year the Council of Girls will have made some sort of progress and more girls will decide to get on board.

So far the Council of Girls has been a great deal of fun as some of the other girls have pointed out. But for me one of the main highlights has been making progress with the magazine, which was slow to take off but now we are moving along quite nicely. Within my sixth form we have had a meeting giving everyone the opportunity to have their say on designated areas. Some of their views will be added to the magazine.

Anyway, I hope this little snippet helps make you realise that the we aren't just all mouth but that we have an aim and as a group we have the determination to follow through.

Nevertheless, for me personally my AS Levels take priority of course as I have high hopes for myself and plan on making it to the top, not conforming to the many stereotypes the youth of today are given.

But, for now I shall go and will be back soon. Bye! xXx

An enriching day

Goldman Sachs enrichment day was amazing! After a fine organised tour around one of Goldman Sachs buildings in London and a 'skills session' about CVs, we were left to discuss the future with regards to the development of the 'Council of Girls' magazine.

Firstly, we drew up an action plan for the next month. The introduction of roles and assignments really helped kick start the development of the magazine. Whilst indulging on Starbucks frappuccinos we discussed and caught up with current affairs and life in general. What a day!

Tia's rules of thumb for 2009

There comes a time in one's life where you feel totally and utterly helpless. This time for me is now. At the midpoint of my AS year I have realised that I haven't achieved what I have wanted to. Why? Well it's simple really; I've been lazy, disorganised and slightly uncommitted. Sounding familiar? I certainly haven't been following the behavioural patterns of a prospective Cambridge student. You see here's the thing, I have a huge build up of work, and an expanse of paper, and after much deliberation I have worked out how to solve it. Yes I need to be more alert, organised and committed, but I also need to balance my time and relax. I've come up with a few rules of thumb that will help me get on top of things:

1. Set realistic goals- maybe about two or three tasks a day and then I'll stick to them! Nothing's more down heartening then failing to achieve something.

2. Think up fun ways to learn things- maybe I'll have a great Gatsby dinner party or a maths type pub quiz.

3. Have some me time! –  I'm not going to overload myself. Taking on too many things at one time causes a monumental build up of work. I'm going to create a timetable and have a healthy work life balance.

As of now I am going to straighten things out, I am going to achieve the unachievable, and one day that little 'un' part will just drop off. If I can do it, so can you.

Getting started

Motivated, resilient, inspired. Eight girls from three schools have undergone a rigorous selection process to become founding members of the Council of Girls. The eight girls (known as Spokes) will lead discussion groups in their schools, working together to come up with real, practical solutions to some of the major issues they and the girls around them are facing. No subjects are off-limits. The aim? To unite girls from every background who want to combat the negative image of teenagers today. The challenge? This is a pilot year, so the success or failure of the Council of Girls is in their hands and yours! This blog will trace the journey.

To find out more about the girls here's an audio introduction Council of Girls first meeting mp3
